Modified suspension with pre 1935 parts
Planning my first Model A adventure/build. I want to make adjustments for a circa 1934 state of the art chassis. I will be using a B engine and trans. I plan to use 32-34 front axle and brakes. My questions are:
1) who sells/makes the best kit to mount A wishbone and A pedals with B engine/trans? 2) who sells/makes front and rear engine/trans. mounts? 3) is there a common way to use the longer 32 or 34 wishbones to possibly eliminate hooking the front suspension to the engine/trans? 4) are the ratios for brake levers close enough between Model A and 32-34 backing plates for no problem? 5) I have heard that a 34 steering box can be used in an A by using the A housing and bushing assembly. If this is true, will the Model A column and associated parts work with the 34 box and steering shaft. Thanks for any help! |

Re: Modified suspension with pre 1935 parts
Your would do better to ask this on the Hamb. I did what you are trying it do and this is how. Use a 32 or 34 B front motor mount and a 32 K member for the rear mount. Use 34 pedal mounted in a 32 mount or 34 mount cut down to 32 size. Brakes are fine. Using the K member lets you use a stock 32 wishbone. I also heard about the 34 box but used a Model A with a short pitman arm, works great.

This forum is for mostly original cars. Hot rod questions are best asked on the hamb.

Re: Modified suspension with pre 1935 parts
the 32-34 brakes use most the same parts, just 1" larger---about the same "state of the art"as the A

Re: Modified suspension with pre 1935 parts
I would suggest forgetting the '34 steering box idea and going to a F100 truck steering. The first real improvement over the Model A steering came in 1937 when they added a bearing mounted roller to the sector. This is the same basic design used in the F100 box.

My guess is that your guess would be wrong.

You basically described my car! Not EVERYTHING has to be original imo.

Forever4, this is not an ill advised cobble job. 700rpm, looking at the threads on the page following this one, finds one on oil filters, mitchell overdrives, miscellaneous accessories, Riley intake, Halibrand gas caps, float a motors, Stromberg carbs., and turn signals. Do you respond to all of these in the same manner as to me?

Re: Modified suspension with pre 1935 parts
You must be very busy policing the purity of all Model As. As a note my car remained in the family of the original owner until last year. The original owner was 16 years old when he purchased the car. He was a true automotive enthusiast who immediately made the car his own with period speed equipment and appearance upgrades. Restoration can be made to factory original or to how the car was built by the original owner. If, say we were fortunate to find a289 Cobra with racing heritage, you would restore it as it came from the show room. I would restore it to the way it was raced.

But as several others have also pointed out, your antics are better suited for the HAMB, rather than FordBarn.
