Valve springs
I have wondered if there is a shade tree mechanic way of testing valve springs to see if they have the required tension. Any thoughts. Jack.

Re: Valve springs
Hmmm, since my neighbor owns the tree and all I do is use the shade, I would think that if you had valve spring problems you could find it if you did a "leak down" test, but that would also show if you had a ring problems. Short of removing all the springs and having them tested for conformity, I can't think of anything else "in motor" to do it.

Re: Valve springs
A vise and bathroom scales will give you pretty good ballpark figures.

Re: Valve springs
As PC/SR says or a scale on your drill table and use the quill to compress the spring.

According to Les's red book, the spec is 57-64 lbs at 2.250".

Re: Valve springs
When using the drill press, insert a used valve in the chuck for a flat surface to push against the spring. Use your depth stop to provide your spring height dimension. I've done thousands of springs that way. It's not hi-tech but it will get the job done.

3.6 I don't think spending 277 dollars is what he had in mind for a shade tree job.
