Starter not Engaging
I drove my '40 Ford (stock) to a car show today. When attempting to leave, the starter would spin, but not engage the flywheel. Battery seems fine. I know that cleaning the bendix drive will sometimes solve the problem. Can anyone offer any other suggestions / solutions?
Thanks, Joe |

Re: Starter not Engaging
I think you'll find the bendex springs in broke on the starter drive. Walt

Re: Starter not Engaging
I broke one of the bolts holding the spring, motor was running and I accidently hit the start button, but Walt is correct it is a bendix problem.

Re: Starter not Engaging
Thanks to everyone for their replies. Pulled the starter.....turns out one of the bolts was sheared off. I guess my new question now is, does this just sometimes happen, or is it an indication of some other issue? The starter seemed to have been operating fine until the problem arose yesterday.
