Default Fender Stone Guards

Just got some new fender stone guards for my '47 super deluxe and was just wondering if there is anything I should put on the rubber side to protect from rotting and such? Also, do you paint the metal side before installation to help prevent them from rusting? Or do you just put the danged things on and forget about it?

Use some cheap rattle can paint on the back side and bolt them on.
