Starter for 292 Y-block
I'm preparing to install a new 292 with a Fordomatic into a 1956 T-bird. Although the original starter worked when I removed the old engine, I don't know the history or reliability of the starter, so I bought a rebuilt starter from Mac's. When I laid the two starters side by side, the shafts looked different. (See photo). The gear closest to the starter seems to be a farther distance from the starter on the new starter, and the old starter had something that looks like a spring on the end of the shaft vs what is on the end of the new starter. Will this new starter work on my 292/Fordomatic?

Re: Starter for 292 Y-block
No problem there. Your old starter has the gear pushed back on the curved spline that's on the shaft. In other words it's in the position of being engaged into the flywheel. As soon ads the engine starts the flywheel will shove it back out of the way. Your new starter looks ready to go.

Re: Starter for 292 Y-block
If you rotate the drum that has the gear on it on the old starter you will see that it will retract and be in about the same position as the new starter. You can actually put the old bendix drive on the new starter if you wish. The new starter just has a modern bendix on it.
