Here is a promotional picture of a 1948 Ford F1. In Australia, early Ford Freighters (that is what Ford Australia called these Pickup until 1955, when they were renamed F100 for the first time) had the script painted red. I know that the hubcaps on the Australian 1948 Sedans were painted blue. Not sure when they were changed to red on the Freighters?

If you are going to call your 1948 Ford F1 Australian, you will need to find an Australian Pick-up Bed. This restored 1949 Australian Freighter has the style of pickup beds fitted to all Australian assembled Pick-ups. Notice that they are the same width as the bodies. They are also taller than what was offered in the USA. You can fit a lot into these local beds. This style of wide pick-up bed was the only one available here and was used until 1964. In 1965, the new Styleside Bed was first offered here on the 1965 Ford F100, and the wide pickup bed was finally discontinued after many years of good service. Only the fenders were changed in 1953. These rear fenders were imported and trimmed down on the inside to accept the wider bed.

Here is a Ford Australia Post Card for the 1952 Ford Freighter. As you can see, it shows the wide pick-up body, that was the only pickup bed offered on these Pickups in Australia. Observant readers will see that this Post Card mentions it as a 50th Anniversary Member of the Ford Family? The 50th year was 1953. Typically, new models were not released until half way through the year here, so this 52 Ford was still being sold in 1953, thus justifying the statement. Unfortunately, the picture is too small to pick up on what colour the hubcaps are painted?

The position of the park lights was another feature of the Australian 48-50 Ford Trucks. They adopted the location of the park lights for these trucks from the similar years Canadian Mercury Trucks. I believe that it is a safety feature, as they better show the width of the vehicle much better than when they are mounted in the grille.

I had a '49 F-1 that someone had put radials on with different rims, but the original rims came with it in the bed. The original hub caps in a box were Blue. That doesn't mean someone did paint them along the way though, but they looked original !

Many years ago (late 60's) I purchased some NOS stainless caps from my Ford dealer in Napa, Ca.. The caps were made in Canada and the Ford logo on them was black.

It also has red wheels and trim rings, which are not factory correct.

Well in this "game" you never stop learning do you? Those lens in the Merc are same as 42/early 47 ford car park lights. Bit like Aussies XP Falcon.. used US Comet front guards ( fenders for the north americans)) and the comet dash panel.

Wow. Those beds are really pretty cool!
The width of those is outrageous.

I decided to go with red letters on the hubcaps.
I'm painting the letters right now.

Graeme / New Zealand, You are correct in saying that the Park Light Lens on the Canadian Mercury Trucks, and the Australian 1948-1950 Ford Trucks are the same as the 1942 early 1947 passenger cars, however, the Chrome Surrounds are different. The 1942 Frame was only used for that one year and had fancy ends. It was changed for 1946 early 1947 when it got a raised center with "hash" marks. On the Trucks, they were totally plain,as shown above.
