Default Roadster Pickup

I just turned 70 and as a gift to myself bought my first Model A. Already having lots of fun with it. I have confirmed elsewhere that in 1930 there were 48,378 pickups built. Does anyone know how many roadster pickups were built that year? Many thanks.

According to "The Ford Model A As Henry Built It" on Page 177 there were 3,429 open cabs and 86,383 closed cabs built in 1930. I am not sure if these figures are domestic or world wide production. I am not sure how the book is handling the fact that several months of commercial production in 1930 used the 1929 style cabs. The July-August issue of Ford Life gives a number of 3593 for domestic production and 1009 for foreign production. Where did you get your closed cab number? You should add your general location to your profile. I have owned my early '31 RDPU since 1972. It should be identical to yours except for the splash aprons and the emblem on the radiator shell.

Here in Australia we were in deep depression and total number of 1930 and 1931 Roadster utilities manufactures was 87 ! Very low numbers.

Hey Charlie,
Can you tell me how many roadster pickups were produced in 1928? I never researched this and now after 41 years, I'm curious.
Thanks in advance,

I couldn't find any production information in "The Ford Model A As Henry Built It". The Ford Life article shows a total domestic production of open cab bodies to be 23,972 (no foreign production). Using figures from DeAngelis, Francis, Henry they estimate 40% of these went to pickup trucks, the rest to the big trucks. Their data shows that there were 9589 open cabs built in 1928. If anyone else has and data sources I would appreciate it is they posted them.

Chris, I can understand roadster pickups being sold in sunny Southern California but I can't see that there would much of a market in Canada, especially in the winter. The California roadster pickups were mostly were orchard trucks, take off the top and lower the windshield and you could drive under the orange trees. There is a factory photo showing one parked in the snow, sure glad I didn't have to drive one in the winter.

I think in a large part of 1928 you could only get the open cab pickup. The 9-6-1928 Fargo Service Letter states closed cab pickup now in production.

That's interesting. So there were half again as many open cab big trucks as pickups. Yet pickups aren't all that uncommon but I don't think I've ever seen an open cab AA except for firetrucks (presumably only a small percentage of AA production). Granted probably most of them got worn-out (and pickups have been reproduced), but still...

My information FWIW, is that there were no Model As brought in in 1931. Henry forced so many cars on local dealers in 1930 that they revolted and flatly refused to take any in '31. I believe you could still buy a brand new ,30 model in 1933 - it took that long to clear the backlog. I'm not ware of a 31 or '32 Ford that was sold new here. All I have seen (never seen a '32) have been more recent imports

Queensland assembly records show they were only selling 6 to 12 Model A's per month back in 1930 and 1931. ford Australia was overstocked and that was the reason there were no imports from Canada in 1931. Geelong archives show the last Model A PASSENGER vehicles were sold to the Ford Dealers and agents in June of 32 and the last of the AA vehicles were sold to the Dealers and Agents in November of 32. In 1932 there were 152 Roadster Utilities sold of them 8 were V8 and the balance was the 4 Cylinder jobs. I'm sure there were Ford Dealers & Agents that had left over stock well in to 1932. Times were tough! Regards Dave

Thanks for all the replies and info/stats. My source for the figure of 48,378 pickups built in 1930 was http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/his..._segment2.html
Mine was purchased from an estate in Portland, Oregon 3 weeks ago. I then had it shipped to my home in Highlands, NC
