oil filter adapter O ring
Hi All,
I bought a spin on filter kit for the O ring as I assume mine is toast after a hot tank dunk at the rebuilder. That and I don't know how it old it is. The one the kit came with is a rubber style ring, do I need to add any sort of sealer to it when install it? Thanks, Mike

The aftermarkets kits are not known for quality. It should be a flat gasket and not an o-ring (between the diaphram and block boss. No sealer is used on the OEM setup. SEARCH B7A 6882-A to see if NOS is still available. |

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that seal for the conversion the same as the one that comes with the canister filter replacement? Some old bell ringing saying that’s the easiest and cheapest way to replace it. And they work right.

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
You are right about the gasket-it is a flat piece of rubber-sorry. The screw on portion that I have is an older or original piece so I am sticking with that. I just needed the gasket.

Yes the stiffer fiber gaskets seem to work better than the soft rubber ones. I had two of the adapter kits with rubber gaskets blow out in less than two weeks. The first one was installed by the Y-block guru/owner of a local machine shop, the rubber gasket popped out on the first start-up of the engine. Then I put in a new/reproduction adapter plate & rubber gasket. It popped less than 40 miles later. Third time around I was tired of messing with it and installed a no-longer-available machined aluminum adapter plate with a real O-ring. IMO, and if for no other reason than raging paranoia, I'd use a careful application of gasket sealer on the fiber style gasket. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 02-06-2022 at 01:53 AM. |

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
The flat round rubber gasket is the same one used for the original filter element canister. If you buy a new Purolator P-48 filter element, it comes with that gasket.
I have installed them many times (with engine in car) by wiping out the recess in the engine block and swiping a little clean new axle grease in that recess, then pushing the new gasket into that recess. The grease will hold the gasket in place while you install the cannister (or adaptor plate). Once the cannister (or adaptor) has been tightened down, it squeezes the grease out of the recess and makes a good tight seal. Never had one blow out. |

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
Ted Eaton usually does not sell parts except for used items. Mummert is the best source. I usually do not recommend these guys, but Ecklers usually has the gasket only and had a extra thick one at one time.
CASCO also lists the gasket for the canister type as a separate item.

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
I would trust CASCO.
Best bet probably is to go to a jobber and order FEL-PRO or BEST gasket. |

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
Ok the adapter that came with the engine looks identical to the kit I bought. So I don't know if it is original to the engine in 57 or a replacement adapter. Anywho, I finally got it off and it was spotless behind it. And I had to destroy a perfectly good fiber gasket to find out. Oh well....Off to get a gasket.

Re: oil filter adapter O ring
I came with the spin on adapter when I bought it. I am betting that Tim either replaced the gasket or it was fairly clean to begin with. Oh well, just need to get another fiber gasket now and reinstall.
