transmission oil question

Drove my 48 this past weekend, when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd sometimes it will grind going into gear. Also sometimes from 3rd to 2nd. I try not to rev the engine too much, the more rpms the more it will grind and it seems the hotter it gets it will do it more. I recently changed the oil to 85-140. Would the original 600W be beneficial for my car? Everything is original with 50,000 miles. I'm getting better at avoiding the grind, but would like to improve on it. I also need some good info on checking and adjusting clutch free play. Any info would be appreciated.

clutch freeplay should be 1" to 1 1/2" when pushed down with your fingers, to much free play and trans will grind going into gear, to little and the clutch may slip because its not releasing all the way, and that causes the throw out bearing to turn all the time and is bad on the clutch pressure plate fingers, my guess is to much free play

if it doesnt grind in first or reverse its possibly a syncro problem.i have not seen much change with changing oil from what you are already using.ford 1 has good advice on his clutch setting.

Classic signs of worn bronze synchro rings. The trans has to be disassembled to replace them, but that gives you a chance to go thru the unit and replace bearings, thrust washers, seals, etc.

My transmission used to do that all the time - very annoying - until I discovered I had way too much clutch play - my pedal was almost to the floor before it even started deflecting the clutch. Adjusted that up to 1" play and no more grinding - except going from 3rd to 2nd of course - always have to double clutch that one.

Also, you mentioned something about using the original 600W oil. There warn't no such thing. Here is the spec for the oil to put in the transmission - S.A.E 90 summer, 80 winter. I use 85W-90 year round:

Heavy oil doesn't really fix a problem,it just masks it. More than likely the transmission needs attention, as Mr. VanPelt suggested
