Default Another flathead power post…

Hey guys, I’m probably beating a dead horse here but I’ve been trying to figure out what to do for an engine for my Woodie, it’s obviously heavier than my fordor and I’m going to want to drive and use it (it’s not going to be a trailer queen) and I have a wood boat that I plan to tow behind it (roughly 800 lbs with the trailer) I’ve tossed around the idea of pulling the 276 out of the sedan for the wagon
How much does the increased stroke do for torque/towing power? Should I be looking at a specific cam? Would porting and relieving be beneficial? It is an overdrive car so it does have the lower geared rear end

If you have a short duration cam with a high lift velocity in the 276, switching engines would be the best choice you have.
An ideal "tow" cam is a 1007b in that engine.
The low end torque is really good.

As Pete said a short duration cam with cubic inches and compression are the best combination for low end torque. Don't relieve the block, that lowers compression. Stock Ford cam, EAB heads, and the longest stroke your wallet can afford would maximize towing power.

The stock Merc cam is better than the Ford cam.

The 53 "EA" or "EAA" is the hottest OEM cam.
I doubt you could tell between any of the stock cams in the seat of pants dyno.

Some sources may say so but not the same.

when and how you drive this will dictate both cam and carburation needs so time to work out what rev range will work for you and then build around that the other thing is what fuel is readily avalible [no good building something that required 100 RON when the best you can get is 85 RON ]
