Default 53 ford windshield trim

Installed the windshield in my 53 ford Ranchwagon. It has the bottom chrome trim piece only. The trim kept falling off during installation. I removed the trim, and installed the windshield. Is the trim piece just cosmetic or does it serve another purpose. I plan on just leaving it off. I think if I grind the lip off the trim, I might be able to slide it in the groove if required. Thanks..

The lip is what keeps it in place. Sounds like it was not pushed into the gasket far enough to hold it in place.
