Fritz all the defrost nozzles I have removed from Ford cars and trucks have used the old fashioned black electrical tape and a tar putty type of substance to seal the flexible hose that connects to the nozzle on hot water heater defrost nozzles. Most Ford hot water heater defrost nozzles are oval shaped on the end that the flexible hose joins see attached. That is Ford cars years 39, 40, 41 - 48 and Ford Truck 39 - 47. See attached.

Excellent photos of the various pieces used! I find it very interesting and helpful, as information on these is rather difficult to find. Thanks mecuryclyclone for posting these and other related info.

I have no idea what was done at the factory, but considering the uncomfortable positions necessary to attach the vent and hose to the dash, my plan is to add some additional security via wrapped, then tightened wire. No interest in revisiting the project, especially on the driver's side.

Great photos from Mercurycyclone. Thank you. I didn't want to use something that might become soft or unglued. That's the reason for the wire. Still, by keeping the 'back pull' on the hose to a minimum, a slip fit may be sufficient.

This is my 10th post, which allows me to do something new on the site. I just have to figure out what it is!
Mercurycyclone mentions the other, perhaps more important reason for adding some adhesive and extra squeeze on the hose. That is, sealing the hose to the vent/nozzle. I found serious leaking with the slip fit only while figuring out how to approach the whole setup.

When you get you system up and running don't for get to pull your inside windshield trim a put a small piece of foam rubber in the back side of it at each end of the defroster slit so all that nice warm air goes to the glass and not out all around the outside of the trim. My 41 pickup still had the remnants if these still in place when I took the molding out to refinish it. I have since checked my other cars and placed them appropriately and it makes a huge difference. Tim

Excellent advice. Do you have a photo or sketch of exactly where that foam rubber is placed? After all this effort, I’d like to get it right. Thanks!

They go in the under side of your inside molding just beyond the ends of the defroster slit stamped in the molding. What you trying to accomplish here is to force all the warm air up through the slit onto the glass and not let it out under the molding to points unknown. Originally they were some kind of black foam rubber but since they can't be seen I simply used some gray packing foam cut big enough so as to compress and seal when the molding was screwed in place.

A tip. Use a couple pieces of welding wire through the duct screw mounting holes as guides. Slide the duct up the wires and secure it at the top of the dash with some tape to keep it in place. Use small pieces of tape to hold the mount screws to your screwdriver when installing the screws. This will especially help get the driver side duct in place, with the instrument cluster installed.

Attach the hose to the nozzle and then that "assembly" to the cowl. No or sealer was used originally, and none is necessary now.
