Re: Starter spinning
What about the teeth on the starter drive itself? Is the starter drive to the rear of the fly wheel?

Re: Starter spinning
Teeth on starter is good , no metal shavings, whe I pulled starter out the drive was out from the starter itself up against the spring, all metal and spring looks great no chips or wear.

Re: Starter spinning
If the battery is low, or connections bad the starter will not spin up fast enough to spin in the drive, if the drive has grease on the screw threads for the pinion it might move too stiff to engage ==try cleaning it, only light oil for lube ---some have a little pin with a small spring to keep it from vibrating down the threads while running ---that can stick, how easy does the pinion turn on the thread??

Re: Starter spinning
Mike, Make sure the threads on the shaft that the Bendix gear rides on are clean and very little if any light oil is applied to it. Also, while you have the starter off the motor, look in the hole and make sure that you haven't sheared any teeth from the flywheel. Ken

Re: Starter spinning
You could try cranking engine over by hand to a diff spot on the flywheel(diff teeth) and try it again if you can't find anything wrong with the starter.

Re: Starter spinning
I did just that before i took out the starter, Starter just still spun, flywheel is attached not broken. if it did break(flywheel) then the flywheel would have spun freely aswell. the 2 bolts on the bendix spring are securlly attached , no rust, nice and clean. the pic I posted that what the shaft looked like when i pulled it out. is that the same postion when i reinstall it? or does the drive come closer to the starter. Mike

Re: Starter spinning
Pull the gear very lighly and see if it binds. The starter has to slide toward starter to engage flywheel.Had it happen to me.If it does it again, if thats the problem swap it out, junk

Re: Starter spinning
Mike, I would remove that spring and double check it before you reinstall the starter. Sometimes the break is hard to see. Your picture is the way the starter will look when you replace it in the housing. You may have to 'fidget' with it a bit to get it to clear the flywheel but you'll know when it is in. Also, now is the time to put that hangar on the front of the starter that bolts to the pan on a pan bolt. If you don't have one, Macs and other suppliers have them. Ar you running 12 volts? Ken

Re: Starter spinning
Did I not read somewhere that if you put a late model v8 spring in will turn wrong, I see this is a 12v did you build it or have it built, check the spring there was a post on this months ago

Re: Starter spinning
The pic is not my starter , it was an example of one to see if it goes in correctly , My system is all 6volt witch i like and may change over to 12 v in future. the spring on mine is fine I took everything off to clean it all. I think it (motor) was cold but i did hand crank the motor for 5 mins before i started anything. Cheers Mike
