Default Turning Whitewalls Black

I purchased a Model A that has white wall tires and would prefer black walls. I am going to repaint the rims but also would like to make the white walls black and turn the tires around. Any suggestions? Ed

I have considered the same thing. I'm looking forward to responses to this question. And hopefully some before and after pics.

Forever Black is the dye you need. I did my rear tires after i reversed them. Worked great, it has a sponge top on the bottle that glides along the whitewall just fine. My camera does not take decent pics, sorry. I bought Forever Black online, couldn't find it in stores. 6 months since i did them and still looking good.

Mount them with the black side out and paint the insides with tire black.

As Glenn says. Try a store that sells automotive paint for a high quality paint to turn them black.

I did just that, a couple of weeks ago:

The stuff is ridiculously expensive, but I didn't need much. If you want to send me a $15.00 bill, I'll ship you a jar over with enough paint for 10 tires:

I was also going to suggest mount black side out, but to use black leather dye on the whitewalls that will be pointing in...

I used black leather dye (not polish) on my very faded running board rubber (applied twice) and it worked great. That was fall of 2011 - still looks very, very good.

I've also used it on sun faded hard plastic on my Harley - looks like new... going to try it on faded vinyl this winter

About $5 a bottle at the local shoe repair shop...

Too bad JC Whitney doesn't sell black port-a-walls.

The simple answer is, Black Stove Polish. It comes in a tub and has about the consistancy of tooth paste.
You can get it at fireplace stores and sometimes, Ace Hardware has it. If not, they will get it for you.
People in the south won't know what it is, but us Yankees will.
If it is strong enough to dye iron, rubber would be no problem.
The rear tires on this car are, actually white walls, which have had the Black Stove Polish treatment. These tires were done about five years ago.
It is also good for dressing running boards.
Wear rubber gloves !

Maybe, next week, I can round up a few more pics for you.
"T" frame, narrowed to V8 motor mount width. Cowl is '27 "T", shortened and narrowed.
DICK KRAFT from California built the original, in the early 40s for drag racing. It was the first, purpose built drag car.
"HOT ROD" magazine list it as one of the 100 most important Hot Rods.

I scrubbed my whitewall spare with TSP & dyed it with RIT, black liquid fabric dye from the market. I "shined" the WHOLE tire with PAM! & it almost mounted itself on the rim by itself!! Hope it doesn't "pop off" by itself?? ("MAYBE" bacon drippings would have been a better choice???) Bill W.
