Generator front bearing

Hello,

I am working on my 1930 model A and now i noticed some squeaking sound from the front bearing of the generator.
The generator works fine and the rear bearing doesn't make any noise so I just want to replace the front bearing.
Does anybody have the bearing code for the front bearing? I wasn't able to find it online.

I don't think the front bearing is hard to get, the usual Model A parts people should have them and any other parts needed for your generator.

You are hearing that squeak with the v-belt off i hope. My generator squeaks a little at the brushes.

There is an oil hole in the front, between the pulley and generator front plate under a little cover that slides sideways...it may not be easy to see if its dirty..

Also you can "motor" the generator using a 6 or 12 battery as power. If the generator is good it should run just like a motor, but not real fast.

I agree, the bearings are common and a bearing house ought to have them, if you have one nearby.

Yes, the pilot bearing in the flywheel is the same as the front generator bearing.

Actually, I believe that the generator with both front and rear bearings might have been used into early 1930. And, of course, we know that 90 years later, this gentleman's car might very well have the two bearing generator on it. No harm .......... no foul as his question relates to the front bearing.

Here are some photos of a recent 1929-30 generator (two bearings) that I rebuilt for a friend. This should give you some idea what to expect if you decide to change the front bearing. It's not difficult. Just keep the order of parts in mind. You will need a small two-jaw puller to remove the front and rear bearings from the shaft.

Two more photos to help you. The rear bearing I removed was spewing grease all over the inside of the generator case. Vendors were out of the $5.00 Chinese rear bearing, so I upgraded locally to the one pictured here for three times as much. The bearing company counter guy said it was also three times the quality as the ones sold by Model A vendors. I suspect the failed one I removed was the $5.00 variety. It didn't look too old, but it sure had failed.

The front bearing of the generator has the higher load because it is driven by the fan belt. Thus the ball bearing in lieu of a sleeve bearing. When replacing the front bearing, you should also replace the back bearing too.
