Default Mercury floor mat - anyone know what it is?

I recovered this floor mat from a non-Mercury vehicle. These photos are before I cleaned it up, but it's in pretty nice shape. I imagine this is something that isnt reproduced - Especially in this green color.

I'd like to see it go to a good home, but have no idea what year it would be from. Any help appreciated.

Just a thought, but is there a part number molded on the back side anywhere?

Hard to say for sure but the clues (the stylized M, and MERCURY lettering style) say '55/'56. Merc's marketing slogan for '55 was "The Big M" since it was a much bigger car than previous models.

That sure is an interesting floor mat. As Dobie Gillis said, Mercury started promoting their cars as the "Big M" in 1955. This mat would probably be from this era. When did Mercury start substituting rubber mats for carpets in the front floors of Mercurys?

I don't know a whole lot about anything but, to me, the entire edge
has a flat smooth look, like it was an accessory to go on
top of the carpet in front, not screwed under the floor edge
aluminum trim panel. Is the back of the panel ful of anti-skid bumps?

It definitely looks like it goes over carpet. If it was a regular mat to cover the floor the tunnel hump would be molded into it. I think the Merc accessory mats came in colors to match the carpet.

I agree, definitely an accessory.

Thanks fellas. Sounds like it's a dealer add on for carpeted mid 50s cars. It has a bunch on little tits on the back of it to hold it in place on the carpet.

There isn't a part number on it that I can find. It looks like it's been cut on the passenger side edge, and has an extra hole near the dimmer switch.

I assumed it was worth saving, but does anyone have an idea as to value? Send me a message if you're interested - I don't have a Merc to put it in.
