it looks like the stroke was increased, the rod journals are offset ground

So, one would have to use a longer rod, or piston with a different wrist pin placement? That's an excellent observation on the offset grind, did not catch that.

They've done everything from welding on counter weights to using the B crank. It was likely more common in the last 40 or 50 years than it was back in the earlier days but plenty of hot rodders built 4-bangers that ran the lakes.
