Mechanical Brake Parts. Who has good ones?
I'm trying to rebuild the original brakes on my '32 Ford. I ordered new parts from a large mail order parts supplier in New York. I won't say which one for now.
A local shop relined my brake shoes with correct woven lining and ground them to fit my cars .040 oversize drums. I experienced problems when I tried to put it all together. The new roller track plates are much thinner than the original. The heads of the roller pins now rub on the backing plates, and now the wedges are also closer to the backing plates. So close that there isn't enough room for the back side shoe rollers to fit behind the wedges. I talked to a "technician" at the mail order house. He was not interested in the fact that their plates are .074" thinner than original, even though they claim to be an official Ford Motor Company parts supplier. Instead of wanting to fix the problem, he offered to refund if I sent the parts back. His defense of the parts was that no one else is having problems with the parts. The original roller track plates from my car are .215 thick. The mail order house plates measure .141. A local supplier has some in stock that measure .157. Who has the correct ones? Stan |

Try checking with C&G. Even if they don't have them, at least you'll get a straight answer.
By the way, there is no such thing as an "official Ford Motor Company parts supplier". Ford will license a product, but doesn't do testing or endorsing of anything. ...And of course you were the first one to have a problem, as was everyone else who complained about anything. Standard Procedure, puts the blame on the customer.

I like to weld the original roller tracts and grind them flat.

Many of the parts are the same as model A, try Snyders, Brattons

Actually there were originally three different thicknesses with different stud shoulder dimensions to match the different thicknesses. They must be used in matching pairs. The first increase in thickness took place during the '32 model year and the second sometime in the '33 or '34 model year.

Re: Mechanical Brake Parts. Who has good ones?
The catalogs list the plates to fit 28-34.
The new V8 catalog for the Lockport New York vender came in yesterday's mail. Now the plates are not included in their brake parts section. Maybe they already knew they weren't correct. I see that Flathead Ted offers a roller pin with a flat surface to contact the roller track. This should make a huge decrease wear between these parts and make much smoother brake operation. |

Re: Mechanical Brake Parts. Who has good ones?
Thanks for the complement. We do a stud that takes care of the various thicknesses and a stamping that over lays the old track,

Probably easiest and fastest is to weld up your originals and grind them down. I have done this for friends and it's not a huge deal.

I can salvage a pair from some 34 backing plates, and weld them up. I'll make some custom roller pins of my own design (inspired by the ones Flathead Ted makes) and use them. After studying all the parts for a while, it isn't too hard to see where improvements to the design can be made. |
