Transmission rear main bearing
Transmission parts are installed as per installation schematic how ever I have two questions.
1) When I install the transmission rear main bearing and rear bearing retainer, the rear bearing moves back and forth within the confines of the bearing retainer about 1/4 of an inch. Using standard issue gasket that come in the kits. Wondering if gasket is too thick. 2) With the u joint not installed, what keeps the main output shaft from moving back and forth. The retainer ring inside keeps it from coming out the end but it still moves quite a bit inward towards the input shaft. Hope this is written clear enough. |

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
The bearing is too loose in the transmission case and the output shaft. Use some lock-tite sleeve and bearing fix in a tube. Follow directions.

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
When you install the U-joint it will hold the bearing tight against the forward stop.

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
The question regarding the bearing moving 1/4 inch with the bearing retainer in place does not appear to have been answered. The only way I can imagine the bearing moving that far is if it was assembled without the snap ring that fits on the O.D. of the bearing in place. Your bearing should have a narrow slot that is fitted with a snap ring to keep the bearing from moving forward in the case. If you purchased a bearing locally you may have been sold a bearing without the slot and snap ring.

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
The rear bearing does not have a groove for a snap ring. The forward stop is in the transmission case, either machined into the case or a snap ring.

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
AR transmissions have no snap rings and the front bearing retainer is the bell housings, same with a multi disc clutch. From early 1928 to early 1929, transmissions had a machined lip to retain the bearings from going into the case.

Re: Transmission rear main bearing
Sorry for the misleading info; I've been working on V8 transmissions lately and assumed the A cases were the same design.
