Default backyard 29 built out of available parts

when I took my coup apart it seems it is a bunch of mismatched parts, early shocks on the front and later on the back ,28 frame under a 29, fender braces were different, 31 motor , late transmission, mixed cast and steel brake drums, 31 steering wheel, a fuse box with 12 fuses in it on the firewall the rumble lid isn't fitting right so it may be a bastard part, the rear spring had 12 leaf's and home made shackles,16 inch rims, and fiberglass resin and cloth patches plus the whole top was glassed over, It's a good thing I'm going for a driver and not restoring it. The title says it is an April 29 and it had a matching motor that hasn't been re-stamped. All this was done before 1972 when it was put in a shed and stayed there until
2 years ago.

Clean it up, make it safe and like they say, drive it like you stole it!

Mismatched parts trump missing parts!

Sounds like a fine example of someone that knew how to make the best he could out of what he had to work with...Enjoy it, most people will never know the difference and it will bring many smiles to many faces, hopefully yours is the biggest.

Like any octogenarian, I reckon your car might have a few stories to tell about those substituted parts.

Thumbs up Re: backyard 29 built out of available parts

I would bet that you'll find that at certain times and places, folks will flock to it. There is, in my opinion, a particular fascination with original, unrestored vehicles.

My 29 Special coupe(Avitar) was half a car when I first bought it in 1980 and it was a lot of part searching.

I saw a NICE '30 Coupe, with '29 fenders & running boards & shields. "Any problems fitting them"?---"I don't know, it was that way when I bought it"

There were many incorrect parts used to keep my 29 tudor going over the years. Part of the fun for me is locating and returning the correct parts to my tudor.

I just pulled the two front shock off and found that One side had a shock arm replaced with a 30-31 arm (picture 1), but I have a nice set of 29 arms to correct the problem (picture 2).

BTW Don't assume just because you have shocks - that you actually have shocks! Mine were doing nothing, with no resistance in either direction! They will be replace with Stype shocks already on hand (picture 3).

You know that this Model A was used, probably every day, and fixed by the owner-driver with what was available. Not a coach house queen for sure. I would really like to read it's diary!
Keep it like it is!

I am the second titled owner, but it did change hands a couple other times.
I have all the bills of sales, unfortunately the orig. owner is not around .

What I tell people about the Model A Ford is; MARC has been around since 1952, MAFCA been around since 1955..people have been building Model A's out of pieces and parts for over 60 years..when people would buy them new and wreck them and fix them with what ever parts they had. There are people inheriting and buying these "Johnny Cash Cars" (what I call them)
and being confused about their originally..yea Old Henry would use parts til he need new but an early 31 is not going to have an early 29 part on it..but a late 30 part could have ended up on an early 31..or the person building the car out of parts could be like me and try to find as many early 31 goodies and make it look early '31 as possible? Good Luck, Benny

I've bought a few repo parts and have decided to use as many original parts as I can to put it back together as the parts I bought don't look or fit the way the real ford parts did.
so far the motor is rebuilt ,the trans is rebuilt ,the rear-end has been resealed and inspected, brake drums have been replaced by good orig. cast drums, brake shoes professionally relined by Potter Webster co in Portland, straightened brake rods with good ends and new pins, new spring bushings with serviceable shackles(the repo ones looked a little marginal for strength), springs taken apart and ridges ground down ,lubed and put new center pins in, plus lots of cleaning and painting.-----body work next--something new to learn.
