Re: New model A U-joints
Careful what you buy as a lot of the previous available U Joints would not fit in the clamshell of model A's.

The one on the left is the problem one.

This is another example of why we will miss Macs/Eklers/Specialized. They were the supplier manufacturing the reproduction rebuild kits that allowed you to rebuild an original U-Joint.

I always appreciate your posts but in this case the last U joint I got that didn't fit was from Macs / Eklers |

FWIW, I have made several of the repro joints work after about 30 minutes in the lathe. Not sure if the backorder is due to re-tooling or just supply chain delays. |

Re: New model A U-joints
I was not aware you could rebuild the original. The fact they are riveted together and never seeing a kit coupled with hearing and seeing articles that they were not rebuild able sure reinforced that to me. Did that kit come with new rivets

Re: New model A U-joints
I have (2) 1948 Lincoln needle bearing U joints I will sell. I paid $100 plus shipping each for them and that’s what I will sell them for. 1948 was the last year that Lincoln used a torque tube and for that one year they used a needle bearing U joint. They WILL fit in the clamshell. They are not new but they are in as new condition.

Not all join's were riveted.

Re: New model A U-joints
I rebuilt one years ago by removing the rivets and replacing them with high tensile bolts. It is still working well.

Try Bert's in Denver. They probably have a good used one or a rebuilt one. They are a wonderful parts source.

I just ordered one from him, Gary Nelson. He charged $65 via PayPal with free shipping. Here is a picture of his work. I’ll try to remember to post here after I receive his product. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Re: New model A U-joints
The U-joint on the left is a Ford original Model "A" U-joint and it is not rebuildable. The Spicer U-joint in the middle replaced the one on the left for service, it is rebuildable, and it is a far better design. The photo on the right is the rebuild kit for the Spicer U-joint.

Terry, I know that you have probably forgotten more about Model As then I will ever know. That said however, you are rude, condescending, and just plain not a nice person. I know some 8 year olds like that,

I think correcting the spread of misinformation is better than the perception of one's behavior in a response. The early, riveted style can in fact be rebuilt. |
