Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Anyone have or know of the availability of a Model B 4 cylinder fuel pump with a hand primer. I have yet to encounter one .I do know that Mart has one on his V8
engine ? |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Mechanical fuel pumps with the priming lever were very common on industrial/farm engines.. From past experiences in the late '40's, early '50's, I know that the Wisconsin
V4 engines used the same fuel pump as a Ford V8. I would venture the guess that your friend's car has a industrial fuel pump on it..

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
A lot of UK cars had them ,its likely that a Ford 10 or a Triumph one would fit

Ted, you're right. Many pre and post war cars had them and in particular Triumphs.

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
This is the pump that was on my 33 model B when I purchased it. I have another restored one without the hand primer on my car and keep the old one as replacement.

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Doctors,
That's really interesting. Any idea what make and model the pump is with the hand primer? Do you know if the mounting holes are staggered or in line as per the two photos? |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Kurt,
On your Triumph pump, are the mounting holes staggered or horizontal? On my 32B they are staggered. No shortage of Triumph pumps here in the UK. Do you know which application or model that your pump is ? |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
The mounting holes are staggered and will bolt to the "B" block, the lever ends up in the wrong place though so it isn't a direct fit ---I don't know if the lever could be modified, I jave 2 other pumps that are american, from unknown WWII application that have primer levers ---they have staggered mounting, but not compatable levers ---never found what they fit, but sold a lot of them when I used to sell at Hershey etc

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Forget that. Just checked a herald 1360 pump, it has level bolt holes, not staggered.
Sorry. Martin. |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Think Austin 7 had the staggered bolts, most
Have hand priming to. Worth a look. Have you tried Bob of the nervous persuasion? Martin. |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
You might need to identify the manufacturer of your ford pump, (Probably AC), and then find another pump from that manufacturer that has a near enough bolt pattern, and a primer lever, but maybe the wrong lever. Hopefully there should be some commonality of production allowing the lever to be swapped.
There may be a commercial or agricultural application of the B engine that would be more likely to have a lever. I vaguely recollect things like Austin Somersets having primers. Mart. Last edited by Mart; 10-06-2014 at 03:29 PM. |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Petes.......Nope!....Parallel mounting holes. Mart, I tend you agree with you. Being the ultimate optimist I was looking for the easy option but realise that it's going to be a case of lots of dismantled pumps on the bench.
Triumph TR3-4 had staggered mounting holes. |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Martin,
No I havn't tried Bob but have tried Dave Renner who says he's never seen one and if Dave hasn't seen one the chances are they don't exist, however that doesn't mean to say that someone really clever like Mart hasn't made one. I'll give Bob a call.... |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Tiger.1000. I shot 2 additional photos showing the mounting holes you asked about plus an old photo showing the mounted pump before restoration began. The holes are staggered. There is no brand but the following is engraved on the pump: "Type U Made in England". My car is RHD originally from the USA.

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
Scooder.....phoned Bob.... creating a B pump with a priming lever appears to be like a walk in the park for Bob !
"Just a matter of digging around in the parts bin; pulling a few apart; swapping levers....give me a day or two....." said Bob ! PHEW ! |

Re: Model B fuel pump with hand primer ?
A type U is an AC designation, so we're on the right track, and it sounds like something Bob is familiar with.
Cool. Mart. |
