Default REAR Fender Questions ? ? ? ?

Pictures below / attached are of my two rear fenders at the running boards. The first one shows the likes of a fender ending I have never seen. Is this fender cut off or is there such a fender? If it has been cut would anyone care to guess how it could end at the running board like it does and still fit properly?

Sorry for the pictures coming sideways.

You didn't mention what car the fenders are on, but they look like a coupe or roadster. The picture on the right is the way all the rear coupe/roadster/pickup fenders I have seen look. The left fender must be a reproduction.

wrndln - The car that the fenders are on is a '31 Blindback, so I guess you are telling me that it is the wrong fender for the car.

Now my question to you is how can you tell from that small of a picture ? I'm trying to learn something here.

Thanks for your response.

I don't see how what you show can be done without some major evidence of butchering being clearly evident when viewed from the underside. I would expect to see all the fender mounting holes redrilled or butchered (to rotate the fender) as well as the "tail of the fender riding a couple inches higher from the ground on that side. There must be more to the story than you are showing us.

It appears to me that the rear fender was cut off about an inch or so and rotated down and bolted to the running board for some reason. Check the mounting holes on the body and see if the slots for the body bolt studs on the fender have been enlarged. That is about the only thing I can see to make the fender look like it does. I believe there should also be a "doubler" metal piece spot welded in the inside of the fender where it is bolted to the runningboard. Can you post a picture of that area?

FIRST - Thanks to all that have responded. Below are some pictures I hope will be helpful!
Don - below you will see a picture of the area that bolts to the running board. Hope this is what you were suggesting.
Marco - As you suggest to look at the mounting bolts for the fenders and there is no apparent "butchering" or extra holes in the fender. I measured the "tail of the fender" and found the right side at 13 1/4" compared to the left side of 12 1/4".
wrndln - As above I see no extra mounting holes or enlarged holes.

I guess I have run out of ideas. The fender doesn't look right, but I can't think of anything else that could have been done to make it look like it does. Maybe it will have to remain a mystery like many other things that have been done to model A's over the years.

Maybe a 30's replacement part? Anyway it should be curved like the other one. So modify it or leave it as is as a conversation piece.

The fender was not made that way. Unfortunately I'd have to see it in person to figure out exactly what someone did to the fender and possibly the body. The only "wrong fender" it could be is a '28-29 but that part would still fit and look the same. It would require a modification for the running board shield fit and the rear "tail" has a different shape which is obvious for some of us.

Oddly, the pic makes it look like it was bobbed off after it was painted.

Marco - Ironically the one picture I which is at the running board showing the "filler" piece other than being rusted fits like it should.
Don - Puzzling to say the least. I have looked at this for some time now and would have thought there would be extra holes in the fender or at the very least oblong holes to allow the fender to be rotated. I will be measuring the fenders as you suggested in the A.M. and will get back to you.

A good bodyman could make the "lopped off" fender look like the other one, EASY!

how does each fender compare with a tape run over the crown of the fender from running board to tail ?

Codder, I have two NOS rear fenders and they are not the same; New Old Stock REPO. They are for a Tudor and yes one has the lip and one does not. I only noticed it when I placed them on the hardwood floor after painting. All the holes match within 1/16 of an inch and the one missing the lip clearly was not modified. I have sent you a personal message re my email address for pics.

Thanks again to all that have responded!
Don -Both fenders are 70"+/- 1/4" "from the top of the running board across the top of the fender to the tail". Both fenders are 40 1/2" +/- 1/4" "from the bottom of the rear splash apron to the tail". Now I think it is VERY, VERY puzzling !
BillEven though I don't know much about body work I think it would take some doing but you know the old saying "With enough time and moneyanything can be done.
poochYour question answered above.
Thanks again to all !

I thought Dave had the answer with a poor repro fender.
