Yea, I know there are some 'independents' that run, but for the most part it has come down to how deep are ones pockets. The year they started in Atlantic City had a day one lunch stop about 10 miles from my house at the local HD dealer. I was there to watch them come in. Talked to a lot of the guys. They were all really good people having a lot fun. At one time My brother and myself had well over 2 dozen antique bikes, several being pre '20s. By hanging out in those circles you get to know many people. We knew quite a few riders, mostly casually through club meets. We even thought about doing a run ourselves, for about 15 min., LOL

The year the Great Race started in Jacksonville FL, a friend of mine, Don Higgs, completed the race in an open Rootleib '29 speedster similar to the one in this video with NO support vehicle, just he + his navigator + what the speedster could carry. They wore Civil War army caps and called themselves the "blue & gray team". There was a lot of rain on the race route that year.
Don wanted to do it again the next year but his navigator said "no thanks". So instead he drove the speedster from Jacksonville to Alaska and back, pulling a home-made plywood camper trailer. Soon after that trip he removed the speedster body and installed a Coupe body.
