Yes Ive been running 12 volts with the unmodified generator in my 31 roadster for 12 years with no problem. The generator doesn't know the difference. The generator charges in amps not necessarily volts. I'm pretty sure that any generator would do the same .I use the Fun Projects can style voltage regulator that takes the place of the cut out . I run mine positive ground and not a singly wire needs to be changed to do this .

Purdy is correct about the use of the generator for 12 volts.

The way it works is from how a generator generates the voltage. The generator will keep increasing the output voltage until it destroys itself unless it has some kind of regulation is at the output. If you place a 6 volt battery on the output then you will get 6 volts out because the battery acts as a regulator. 12 volt battery for 12 volts and so on. The trade off is amperage. For the same RPM, the more voltage the fewer amps. Within reason, the third brush can compensate by allowing more amps.

If a person plans to run accessories that demand high amperage out put they would be better off to use an alternator.. I don't use any accessories other than a right hand tail light. I don't adjust the third brush for more than a 10 amp output . The can style Fun Projects voltage regulator controls the amperage out put on demand , similar to a modern car . If a cutout is used there will be no voltage regulation and the acid in the battery can boil over and the generator can be damaged .
