How well to repro splash panels fit?
Hi Folks,
31 Roadster with surface rust under the paint on the splash panels. Trying to decide if it is worthwhile to remove them and refinish them -or- simply buy replacements, prep and paint. Currently everything fits together beautifully - not sure if repro splash panels are shaped correctly. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks |

Re: How well to repro splash panels fit?
I just installed a set of repop panels and running boards on a 30 coupe and was surprised how well they fit. These were an early batch though have no idea the manufacturer.

I got one from Sacramento Vintage and it fit perfectly, but I agree with Charlie Stephens (below).

As a general rule it is better to refinish the original parts. If they are in good shape this would be an excellent place to use powder coating.

Re: How well to repro splash panels fit?
Thanks guys - appreciate the feedback.
I was concerned about tempting fate with the fit. And I never even thought about powder coating them! I am going to pull them off and try to salvage them first. Hoping the surface rust under the paint does not go too deep. |

Definitely use the original.
Check them over, if OK, find a good sandblaster and paint to match. I doubt you will be happy with powder coat on a body panel. |

Re: How well to repro splash panels fit?
I bought the more expensive repros from Snyder's that have the original-design offset on the rear tail and they fit better than the 1980s version I was replacing. It would be nice to compare the originals to repros as I wonder if the curve on the originals was a better-fitting die-stamping and whether repros are simply bent on a brake.
