Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
30CC, I agree with you 100% BUT decided that I should keep it in place as the engine was just rebuilt. Sometime over the next few years I am sure I'll decide to pull the head for some reason. At that time I will change gaskets and repaint. Until then, I am going to try to be real careful to avoid painting the gaskets (if possible).

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
Wrap a piece of heavy twine (heavy enough to cover the gasket gap) around the gap between the head and block where the gasket is and then paint away. When paint is dry, take the twine off.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
Carl, That is a great idea. I may see if I have a large rubber band (which could hold tighter than twine). Thanks.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
I've done it by masking from the bottom of the gasket up and then painting the block. Then when dry, masking from the top of the gasket down and painting the head.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
It is hard for me to believe that the factory didn't paint the block & head as a unit and didn't worry much about the gasket edge.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
I should have given an example of where I used grease. Tape would have destroyed these two decals, which are not made anymore. Some of the edge of the decals was already gone, but I was able to save all that was there.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
Paul, The Bars Leak was used on the instruction of J&M. They recommend its use whenever an engine undergoes metal stitching as part of the rebuilding. My engine had stitching. They did not recommend that I let it splash over everything. That was "my bad".

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
Got my first Model A before MASKING TAPE WAS INVENTED. When Chief & I painted it, we carefully applied wheel bearing grease to the windows, with a wide, flexible Putty Knife & later, removed it with the same tool.
After Masking Tape was invented, Chief called it, "METSICAN TAPE"???---Wuz it invented by a MEXICAN? AND, NO, I don't "make up" these stories!! IF I "made up" stories, they'd be REALLY WILD! Bill W.

Mitch,
I remember a lots of things because Chief incorporated a lots of HUMOR, into HOW things work & how to DIAGNOSE them. He was a FUN MAN & a sort of a SELF TAUGHT GENIUS. I wish I knew ALL the stuff he knew. (RIP, Chief) Bill W.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
New coat of paint is applied and curing. It isn't perfect but looks MUCH better than the stained nonsense I had before. Thanks for all the help. I'm curious how long folks think one should wait before driving the car. Apparently Hirsch recommends that one waits 2 full weeks to avoid wrinkling of paint.

Re: Painting Engine While IN Car
Next time you are at Lowe4s or Home Depot or Harbor Freight pick up several of the Nautral Brislte 1" cheap paint brushes. Cut off all but about 1/2" of the bristles. Use the stiff brisltles as a stipple brush - stipple or dab the paint on instead of trying to brush/wipe the paint on. More accurate in tight spaces around the engine.
Last time I was at HF, the cheapies were 39cents each. bought a bunch of them. Use once and throw away. It cost more to clean the brush than the 39 cent the brush cost. ken |
