36 tranny options ??
Good morning Gents,
I've been on the model A forum for several years but I'm now considering buying a 36 coupe. Are there any transmissions you would recommend for highway use. I'd like to cruse at 70 mph without killing the engine. Thank you for your help. Al Leach |

Carl, thirty-sixes are nice, enjoy. A Columbia would be really nice as they were an original, dealer-installed overdrive. My 2nd choice would be a Mitchel. I've only ridden in one car with the F-150 trans and didn't like the ratios, too big a split between 2nd and 3rd.

You can do a lot of fancy transmission work but I would just put 3.54 gears in the rear end and let it go at that.

Re: 36 tranny options ??
I ran the 39 with stock 60hp all day at 70 plus
For my 36 trans I put 46 gear set in for the better synchro system- and I had new gears leftover from the 46 If the engine is properly built to original Ford specs you won't kill it. --- but a Columbia would make it quieter and give better fuel mileage. ( or a Mitchell od) |

You might want to try posting on the early V8 site. They also have tremendous expertise! Wayne

Re: 36 tranny options ??
Thanks for the information. Now I know the F-150 and Columbia are options.
I like the Mitchell but was wondering if there was something less expensive. The 25% OD is great. Explanation - I intended to post this on the 32-53 site but it ended up here. Thanks again, Al |

Re: 36 tranny options ??
Put a '39 transmission in your 1936. The 1939 transmission is the last year for the floor shift and is an excellent transmission. It should bolt right into your 36 chassis with no problems. Visit Van Pelt Sales web page for all the information you need about the 32-53 V8 3 speed transmissions. You will also want to purchase Mac's transmission book "The In's and out's of early ford transmissions".
I'll tell you that you will like and enjoy that '36 coupe over the Model A. To drop your rpm's at highway seeds consider 3.54 gears in the rear end. No fancy expensive overdrives or f150 transmission is needed. You won't be able to "kill" the flathead V8 at highway speeds. |

Did you also asked this question on the early V8 forum?

Re: 36 tranny options ??
Mike,
I only posted this on the early V8 forum and it turned up here. I don't know how that works. I did use my model "A" ID so I thought that is how it ended up here. Al |

Re: 36 tranny options ??
You don't need a different log in name for the other forums. You may have just accidently posted in the Model A page. That's fine no one was offended. Go ahead and ask your question on the EV8 page. If you buy that '36 you will love these early V8's. I don't believe you will be disappointed. In fact you may find yourself driving your V8 more than your model A as I have.
