Default Should I prime my new fuel pump

Should I prime my new fuel pump on my 40 before I install it or just install and crank away. If so what is the proper method.
Thanks

No need to prime any good pump. That said, it would be a good idea to install but for the carb connection, and direct that tube into a coffee can so you can check the flow of the new pump before hooking it to the carb. Might save some diagnostic time later if it fails this initial test. Another point, some new pumps have been known to have springs that produce excessive fuel pressure. If you have a pressure gage, this would also be a good time to check pressure to be no more than 4 psi.

I usually make sure the push rod is up and work the pump up and down on the rod until it fills with gas and save some grinding on the starter. Not necessary but starts quicker.

I fill the glass sediment bowl with gas on my '51. Probably unnecessary, but it makes me feel better than running it dry.
