Is that right?

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
Both axles are the same and will work on either side .

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
I think that since so many Model A rear ends have spun bearings, probably due to incorrect pre-load setting on the axles, it would be wise to disregard the gaskets installed and to set up the bearing pre-load fresh, on the axles.

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
I think that would depend on whether the bearings in his axle are spun. If not, remember: "If it's not broken, don't fix it!".

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
You also need to inspect the outer hub races, the wear is on the bottom.

OK, but even if it's not broke - what if I could make it just a little bit better - you know, just tinker a bit?! I have trouble leaving anything alone! LOL Seriously, in thinking over my advice to check the pre-load on the axle bearings, it later dawned on me that this particular project was being done with the axle in the car, which means that the drive shaft would not have been removed. Without removal of the drive shaft, the axle pre-load cannot be checked, since you cannot spin the axles to measure the drag to the recommended 20 inch pound spec. |
