hood hinge repair
The hood hinge links on my 48 coupe are loose, I am guessing the rivet hole is enlarged, can a repair be made without buying new hinges?

Re: hood hinge repair
Standard fix for enlarged hole is bring it up a drill size and install a larger fastener or bushing and original fastener. Make sure you have enough material around the hole and you drill it concentrically.

Re: hood hinge repair
Rivet slop is the problem, can regular hardware be used or do I use over size rivets after a redrill on holes?

Re: hood hinge repair
If the rivet is loose in the hole, likely both are worn. If you have the tools, you could try and drive the existing rivet to see if it will swell and take the slop out. If it has flat head and bucktail and you don't care what it looks like you could try mashing it a tad in a bench vise. There are no photos and I do not know how the hinge is assembled but driving a rivet between moving parts, if that is what you are doing, is a challenge: Drive the rivet too much and the parts won't move anymore, too little and its sloppy. Use whatever oversize fits the hole properly. If you re-drill it keep it as small as possible and check rivet availability before you drill. You don't want to end up having to take the hole so large there is no edge distance left on the hinge parts due to available rivet sizes.
If you choose to replace the rivet with a bolt I suggest either a shoulder bolt or a bolt and bronze bushing. Check for head and nut clearance in the closed position first before removing the loose rivet. I would try and avoid having the parts rotating on the threads of the bolt. A standard grade 5 bolt is sufficiently strong for a hood hinge I should think if same diameter as the steel rivet. Use a washer, castelated nut and cotter pin on rotating parts. If that is difficult at least use a self-locking nut, the rotation between the hinge parts will tend to loosen a standard nut, and even a self-locking nut sometimes. |
