Gas Gauge Gaskets
Well, Guys,
I let a friend talk me into a repair that I now have to fix!! I had a faint gas smell in my '30 town sedan and a friend said lets put in a new gasket in the gauge. We did that last week and all was well until I filled the tank yesterday. Now gas is running down my instrument panel. This morning I drained about 1/2 a tank and will now replace the gasket AGAIN. (The favorite saying in our "A" group is "if it ain't broke, fix it till it is broke.") What do you say for the gasket, Cork or Neoprene? Do you suggest any gasket sealer? Also, on my car there are two brass slip rings. Is this common or needed? Will be looking for replies before before I order parts. Marty |

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
CORK only. The other stuff will swell and leak once the corn crap gas hits it. 2 brass rings is common and helps to install the nut without twisting the metal face plate.
I have found repro inner nuts to be useless. The chrome plating make the threads not fit. |

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
As Tom said, only use cork gaskets. I also use a thin coat of Permatex Avation Gasket cement on the cork, it is fuel resistant; have not had any leaking problems.

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
Thanks guys,
I kinda thought the majority would say Cork. I'll order one tomorrow from Snyder's and hope I'm good to go. A little Permatex sounds like some good insurance. Glad to hear that summer is coming to New Zealand. Sorry to hear that winter is coming to Northern Ohio. Thanks again for your help. Marty |

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
Besides the cork gasket on the gauge, I would only add that I prefer the neoprene float. The last time I used a cork float it sank within a year or so...........

I have been in your shoes with neoprene. Cork is the only way to go.

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
Thin Cork, I got mine from All Ford in Campbell, CA. They had all types but I specified the thin cork as the neoprene ones seem to swell, distort and leak in short order. Also they are too thick as are many of the cork gaskets I have seen and the parts don't fit right.

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
I just took mine apart tonight because I could not see the numbers, there were 3 brass rings and no gasket.

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
As stated before don't use the repop nuts, the WILL leak.
Save and use the original ALWAYS

Re: Gas Gauge Gaskets
A little off topic, but another use for these brass washers: They are just the right size to use in the Quail radiator cap under the rubber washer to add a little thickness to get a better seal.
