For upper cylinder lubrication and valves, valve guides etc, engine vacuum was used with "inverse oilers" like the Ampco unit here, Marvel made them as well. A small metered dose is mixed in with the fuel/air charge. Ampco pointed out that adding Marvel oil to the fuel may dissolve sludge or varnish in the tank and this was a better way.

Years ago I put a NOS Ampco system on one of my vintage cars. Setting the feed rate was a massive pain in the a#*. It also had a weird feature: the MMO would actually migrate THROUGH the wall of the glass reservoir and so it was always oily. Too strange!

It has a mixture needle, it can't be that tough??

I doubt this very much

Ed's Red Bore Cleaner does a superb job of removing carbon deposits from my dirty shooters, and I would use it as a rinse in a dirty motor:

1 part Dexron II, IIe or III ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later;

1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1;

1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits, Fed. Spec. TT-T-2981F, CAS
#64741-49-9, or may substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or
equivalent, (aka "Varsol");

1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1.

Make sure the container you mix this stuff in is resistant to Acetone!

You left out the lanolin in the recipe! I've used Ed's Red and it's excellent for a lot of things, as an old school electrical contact cleaner, tuning capacitors &c. A lot of what is sold for cleaning purposes these days has been defanged or is only barely useful for blowing away light dust.

While I wouldn't try to mix Ed's recipe up in a styrofoam cup, in practice it doesn't seem to be too particular. Maybe the mixture of ingredients helps prevent problems. I use any handy empty spray bottle.

A quarter turn of the metering screw would set the flow rate from too much to too little.

Also, temperature variations would change the flow rate due to the nature of temperature changes acting upon the adjustable mechanical orifice (a common phenomenon with other similar mechanisms). On top of that, temperature changes also affect the viscosity and flow characteristics of oils in general.

The Ampco metering system did have a flow sight glass, but what can be seen though the sight glass is almost irreverent to the actual flow rate. So to see the resulting flow rate I had to wait many miles in order to calculate the dropped volume of MMO in the reservoir compared to the amount of fuel that was used.

On top of this, the Ampco system is not an inverse oiler, so it delivers MMO at rates opposite of the actual needed times.

Crankster- Hmm, I don't remember anyone else standing there watching me clean MMO off the reservoir.

That was my experience anyway.
I guess your experience with your Ampco system was different since you doubt the needle adjustment was a pain.

That sounds exactly how a carburetor mixture screw works, they are amazing in their precision. I'd expect that once it's dialed in, the ampco oiler would not need attention again. A quart in 1000 miles is a pretty fine gradient. "Close enough" will work here though.

Not doubting you were cleaning off the reservoir, but they can't leak through glass. Trust me on this.

Your zealous defense of the Ampco oilers is...unusual. Are you selling them by chance?

Please, tell is your experience (hands on) with the Ampco oilers. When you do, you'll find that I won't call you a liar...gentleman don't do that, especially to folks they don't even know. But hey, that's just how I was raised.

LOL!! I'm not defending them, nor do I sell them. I did buy one last night, it ships out tomorrow, in fact. I have used the mystery oil itself for quite a while and it does prevent stuck lifters, valves, and rings etc. My thinking is that the ratio is not super critical, it certainly isn't when mixing with the gas.

I'm not calling you a liar, I simply believe you are mistaken in your diagnosis of where the leak was from. Obviously leaking from somewhere. Marvel's is good stuff, but it can't migrate through glass. See where I'm goin' with that?

I had a Marvel feed jar that came original with a Judson supercharger (not model A). It worked and adjusted fine, but I never trusted it 100% so I choked it down to 1/2 flow and mixed some in the gas. Just a scaredy cat.

Any comments on adding MMO to ethanol-free gas? I'll add 4 oz to 10 gal as mentioned here. Add it both to ethanol free or regular gas.

I believe the MMO to fuel ratio was the same before they started adding ethanol to fuel.

Will MMO freeze in the bottle? I have a bottle sitting in my cold garage.

I doubt it...otherwise MMO would have a sales disaster in the winters

I'd say about one cup per tank.

I use 4 ounces per 10 gallons, but I wish they still used the good metal containers.
I've had two of the one gallon plastic jugs crack and dump the whole gallon.
