muffler adn manifold glowing red hot.
I got a 31 model A coupe chassis with my Pickup sitting on it. The motor runs but after a minute or two the exhaust manifold pipe and muffler are glowing red hot. What could be causting this? Maybe if I removed the muffler would it let enough heat out? Also I know that there is a lever for the timing to advance and retard it. What is that really for? What should I be driving it in and starting it in??
I am know to the stock stuff. |

Retarded timing will do that.

I agree with Flathead. You need to learn how to time the engine and how to run the timing lever. Push up to start then pull down to run.

Re: muffler adn manifold glowing red hot.
I remember mine did that also back when I was a neophyte in this hobby (1966).
As Flathead and George H. says...it is all in the timing of the engine and learning what to do to avoid that. Pluck |

Re: muffler adn manifold glowing red hot.
My experiences with model A timing are when timing is properly set, you want full retard when starting (full up) a hair down when idling (400rpm) and half way down typically when driving 25-35mph. 3/4 of the way down going 40-45mph with properly gapped points.
How advanced your timing should be depends on engine rpm, load and how far open you have the carb. The higher the vacuum the more advance you usually want at any given RPM. It takes practice but you will get the hang of it. |

Couldn't running too lean also contribute to that?

Re: muffler adn manifold glowing red hot.
lean could sure, so could leaky exhaust valves.
I vote lets start with the timing and go from there. |
