Unhappy Starting problem

my 1930 phaeton has developed a starting problem. This is a restored car and has always started quickly. So now I push the starting pedal and the motor turns over as it should just not start. As I lift my foot from the starting pedal the motor starts. not just once but every time now, but not until I lift my foot off the starting pedal. Help!!!!
thnx,

Probably a bad ground somewhere close to the starter, or distributor. Make sure everything is tight, battery leads and amp meter also.

Sounds like there is not enough voltage to give a spark while the starter is running. How is your battery? You may be losing voltage because of a bad connection as said above. Try cleaning and tightening all terminals.

If all the connections check out bright and tight, this could be an indication of a failing coil. Like Synchro said, less voltage available to the coil while the starter is hogging most of it. A good coil will produce a spark anyway, but a failing coil may not.
