29 Tudor radiator support rods

Am I missing something here (see picture)? It looks like the rod will just turn when I tighten the nut at the gas tank bracket. I thought the the whole idea of having a square carriage type head was to keep the rod from turning when the nut was tightened?

Also, is pix #2 the correct position for the washers?

In picture 2 the parts are in the correct order. Is your support rod a reproduction or an original? In the picture, the square head looks small, but originals do not fit very tightly. I believe that the support rods were painted black.

I measured an original support rod I have and it is very close to 7/16" across the square part. The rod in the picture does look like a repro and we all know repro parts are usually lacking in correctness. You might measure your rod and see if it is close to 7/16" for the square part.

Well, at least I now know that I'm not goofy! The square end that fits into the gas tank bracket is .388 and the bracket slot is .468 So I guess the rods are repro's.

The original rods were hollow tubes in the middle. they twisted easily if you weren't careful. Your rods look like the stainless reproduction.

send them back to whom you got them from and re-order from brattons, or syndics or mikes....get the right ones they make repos that fit..these look like MACS....

Not SS but definitely repro! I saw the hollow one in Bratton's catalog.

They were on the car when I started working on it. Look like they have been on the car for a good many years. Worked then--they will work now!

The hollow rods are mainly for 28 model A's. The hollow support rod were used into 29, but most 29's used the solid style as did all 30/31's. If you have a welder, you could weld a little on the two sides and grind them down to fit in the clips on the gas tank.

If you don't have a welder, just pop down to you local Muffler Shop! MOST Muffler Shops have FUN Car Guys!!!
I've used Johnnys' Muffler, since 1955 & it has been run by 3 generations of the Family. It's like visiting a FUN Car Museum!

28-29s are tubular and painted black.

yes and the repro hollow ones are or were, at least, so poorly made that the tube rotates on the carriage bolt. solids are a big improvement.

Here is a picture of the original rods on my late 28, but I'm still looking for the large concave washer for the other rod. See the washer that presses against the bracket. Flat washers were also used, but I'd like to find an original concave one, so they both match.
