Teflon Steering Link Seats
When (if) using the modern Teflon seats in the drag link/tie rod (balls welded/turned to correct size), does one add grease or simply let the Teflon ‘do its thing’?

I added grease: couldn't see the harm. No problems after several years.

I lubricate my Teflon-Seats. I take a special grease for plastics. Klüber Polylub GLY151.

I grease mine. They have been in there for 15 years, with no wear. I had the balls rebuilt by A&L so they are smooth and round.

I agree with the greasers. I greased my when I installed them a year ago. Like was mentioned above, it can't hurt and probably helps.

Teflon is very inert. I do not know of any solvent which will attack it. We were using teflon on globe and gate valve stem seals in HF (hydrofluoric acid) service. HF will not attack steel piping however. Please clarify which solvents put the teflon at risk. Vic |

What will keep the ball, spring and inside of the hsg. from rusting if you don't grease it ?

Most people do not grease things near enough. Grease them and most anything else that moves against another part.

When the Teflon seats are fitted to the drag link/tie rod ends do you notice any difference to steering comparing it with the original steel seats?

Hi Ian. I just had new steering balls fitted by HBI Enginerring in Christchurch. Old ones were incredibly worn.
Les Pearson recommended them. I then fitted teflon buttons and greased them prolifically. My steering backlash is now 2 inches at the wheel, down from 21/2 inches before ( 7 tooth box). But the steering feels no lighter than before. I have a new shortened pitman arm from Snyders which was in some long time before the the new balls were fitted. Toe in set to 1/16 inch. Car steers well at 60 mph . |

Most greasable pivot point failures and excessive wear can be linked to a problem that my Dad always said was caused by "too much grease in the warehouse".

Both my A,s have new steering balls,teflon seats,short P-arms & needle sector brgs & both steer very easily.The coupe will steer slightly easier than the sedan because it has a needle thrust brg on sector shaft & sedan still has the brass thrust washer.I always grease my A,s every 500 miles-more than needed on modern roads-but a tube of grease is good for multiple grease jobs.I change oil every 1,000 miles-no filter.

Tanglefoot. I recognise that "Ahooga". Before I fitted the Mitchell I could only do 59.5 mph! It is so much quieter at 60 with lower revs that I can hear Diane when she yells at me to go faster. The B carby added a lot too.
Today I started building up the pedal stops so the pedals don't contact the floorboards. I hope this will remove an annoying drumming noise as I decelerate. This should quieten things at motorway speeds even more, I hope SAJ in NZ. |

So, can I take it as gospel that all you guy's prefer the newer style Teflon buttons over the original bronze/oilight type? Is there really a difference?

I ended up with just a set of the Teflon seats and not the springs, spacers, etc. that come in the complete kit. Everywhere I've read
about how you must use the special parts in the kit in order to use the Teflon seats. Well, I modified the Teflon seats to work with the original Ford tie rod/drag link parts and they work fine. Must be the old motorsickle hood in me that just don't believe everything he reads. Bob-A |
