I wish the previous owner had Les Andrews book
Les Andrews may not have even been born when this was done.By reading his book on engine removal and noting some things I would not have thought of also, creating a couple issues. The adapter, engine block to clutch bellhousing is cracked, from applying pressure with a floor jack without the engine mounts loose or frame spread? Also the two bottom bolts on clutch housing, casting around these bolts are cracked away, lots of leakage also from transmission. so I really did not want to remove engine at all except for oil pan gasket replacing and cleaning up engine but now I think I had better address transmission and clutch area even though it drove and shifted fine and probably has for years as long as someone kept oil in it. I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it but its definitely been bruised years ago.

The worst enemy our old cars face is NOT the relentless passage of time and the elements - it's what previous owners did to them.

Very true statement. Much of the time devoted to restoration is actually spent on correcting or repairing the mistakes made by the previous owner(s).

Those cracks could have came from a large pot hole. The whole suspension to and fro is referenced to that area via the motor mounts to the rest of the car. Cracks are common to that piece.

I have a spare bell housing and I don’t think it has cracks. |

Re: I wish the previous owner had Les Andrews book
I would be interested in buying either the bellhousing for the transmission or if what you have is the flywheel housing if there are no cracks.I don't think I could get a good picture but I would rather get a picture from you if you would private message me. Thank you

Re: I wish the previous owner had Les Andrews book
The flywheel housing I had that I thought was perfect turned out to have cracks when it was dye penetrant inspected.
I was able to get a used one without cracks from Berts as a reasonable cost.

If the cracks are short, then it will probably be OK to use it.
I'd bet a lot of Model A's have cracks in the flywheel cover. |

Re: I wish the previous owner had Les Andrews book
I had a few extras and found one out of five that wasn't cracked. I did a lot of drilling and tapping and stitched the bad ones back together Using locktight with each stitch bolt. I then hung them and hit them with a ballpeen to see if they would ring like the uncracked on. Not that good at stitching, they still went "thud." However, I wouldn't hesitate to use any of them as the show no sign of movement when I tried to bend the things, (gently)

It's a good chance the next owner is going to say the same thing and the next and the next.
