Default Get cogs on initial 1st gear engagement

Ok not sure if this should be on the V8 or model A forum.
1932 B4 pickup. The original B4 transmission internals were pretty rough ,2nd gear being very very angry, but from memory engaging 1st gear was ok with the original 32 transmission. We changed out the whole internals for 39 V8 gears , simple enough.
I did not realise the input shaft splines were different on the B4 to the V8 ,so found a pretty decent V8 clutch plate in my stash. First drive the clutch was slipping a little on power , but otherwise seemed ok. Did not know what I was doing (as usual) but decided what the heck I will have a bash at adjusting the clutch pressure plate fingers. Hmmm that seemed to work much better now but may need fine tuning.
So the real question is on engaging first gear from a stop we get cogs briefly, which to me indicates something is turning . If we are rolling slightly there is no graunch. Shifting on the move to 2nd and 3rd is good.
I have no problem pulling the engine to fit a V8 pressure plate if that’s what’s needed.

At the stop, if you put it into 2nd to stop things from turning before moving the lever into 1st does that help? Pilot bearing may be keeping things turning as well as the clutch disk dragging.

No @deuce roadster gave it a try though.
Found 2 and 3 were also a little stiff to get into today. Don’t know what’s up but found too much free play ( its only done 20 miles) clutch adjustment helped lots . I know initially free play was around 1”. Now no cogs and smooth shifts. Duh check the basics first.
But am still not sure the clutch clamping force is perfect, it doesn’t grab firm on initial launch , sure it will spin the tyres on stones and grass and stall when the brakes are applied. But I suspect its a little soft , need to try it on some hills possibly. Maybe thats the nature of a B clutch.

Standard operating procedure on a non-synchro low gear trans was to put the trans in 2nd or 3rd to stop the gear rotation, then shift to first or reverse to avoid grinding. When coming to a stop, leave it in 2nd or 3rd until stopped, then go into first. If you want to go into low for engine braking, use the double clutch method.
