Default 1930 emergency brake lever

I'm having problems installing the emergency brake lever in the toggle lever. I can't get the lever to pinch onto the toggle lever enough for the pinch bolt to thread in. Any suggestions?

Make sure the key is installed correctly. Use some Vicegrips to pinch it together. You may have to hold it together with the Vicegrips to get the bolt started. I have a set of needlenose Vicegrips that are handy for tasks like this. Put the bolt in first without the lock washer and after tightened, take the bolt out to add the washer. You may have to get a slightly longer bolt.

If you are using a reproduction lever, this is not uncommon. If this is the case and the opening at the bottom of the lever is very wide, put the lever in a vise first and use the vise to close it up a bit. If you then close it up too much to go over the shaft, you can open it up a little by wedging a screwdriver or chisel into the opening. Once you have the lever closed enough and over the shaft, do as suggested above and install & tighten the bolt without the lock washer to snug the lever prior to final tightening.
