Voltage reg. Looks like a rewire job is in the offing. That way you will know exactly what is in your car vs. guessing all of the time.

Doesn't matter what it is. What matters is what it ain't. And it ain't Model A. As others have suggested, just pull all the old wiring out and put in new and proper. It's cheap, quick, and easy. The consensus here seems to be that Sacramento Vintage Ford makes the best wiring harnesses. I've also gotten good material from Snyder's and Bratton's.
Just one other thing as you begin to disassemble the car to get things back to right: don't throw anything away. Even if it looks like crap. Cloth covered wire is hard to get. That cutout might still work fine. Original parts can often be restored and are always better than repros. Just put everything you remove aside until you get the car running, then wait another year or two. You might be surprised at what you're glad you saved. VOE.

i was reading your other post and you have a very nice car there. it just needs some tlc. you do have a real birds nest going on and a mish mosh of items that are not necessary. do yourself a favor and please take everyones expert advice , buy a new wiring harness as they are pretty cheap and easy to do. please keep the battery disconnected at all times. you might want to get a new junction box also.. |

The three things look like relays of some sort. Where do the wires go?

The bottom part with the three contacts is the voltage regulator for
the top generator. The round part above it is a model A cut-out, and the part to the left is either a headlight relay or horn relay. Bob |

It's a later electro-mechanical voltage/current/cutout device. Can be used with late model generators.

Yea i would take it all out carefully and throw it all in a box on the shelf. I haven't gotten rid of a single thing give taken off my AA. Got a few crates and boxes of "stuff." i dont want to get rid of anything until im "done" with restoring it. Never know what goofy bracket you may need that's attached to a scrap of sheetmetal...

there is a good possibility all the harnesses come from RI Wiring
http://www.riwire.com/ I have toured the factory and it is impressive. They have braiding machines from 100 yrs ago to braid the correct cloth color over modern thermoplastic wire for both safety and authenticity. Their quality is excellent. You can buy spools of cloth covered wire from them in whatever color and gauge you like

Thanks fellas. Y'all wouldn't believe how many splices and burnt up wires melted together there are. A lot of speaker wire spliced in also. Haha it's a miracle she hasn't caught fire. The good thing is the wiring looks a lot cheaper than my last car I restored. I spent right under $1,000. On 3 harnesses! My wife was not too happy about that one. I'm definitely labeling and storing everything away for reference too. Thanks

It is a VR and it is Ford. That would make it a B circuit. If you look where the wires attach you will read on the arm between the screw and body B, F, A...
If you have a two brush generator or a rewired three brush you'll have to deal with going back to a reverse current relay (cutout). If it is a two brush generator the VR will work. Do not play with the points or the spring tension. It looks like the current control in in the middle, no doubt set to 20/25 amps. How tight you tighten the screws when reinstalling the cover will make changes. Take it back to original.
