Re: Oil Filtering Advice
This motor has 20,000 miles and uses no oil between 2-3000 mile changes.
This is the side cover type with the Ford 90* adapter. John |

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
I don't have filters on my cars but I do have magnetic drain plugs in all the places, pan, tranny, and rear end. I change the oil every 1000 miles (easy to keep track of).
I put 1500 miles a year on my cars. No problems. Dick Wyckoff |

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
Engine bearings are babbit. Pistons are aluminum. Both are non magnetic.

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
are you an engineer by chance
there is a shocking lack of hands on experience here.... as I said, take the challenge and then get back to us......are you afraid to pull a side cover? Drop the carb, drain tube, and cover all in 15 min or less and get your hands dirty and take a look at what you find.

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
Hi Joe,
No doubt the $160.00 or so Affordable Oil Filters offered by Model A vendors work well to filter Model A oil; & no doubt they can help to prolong the life of an engine ........ if this is what you one is seeking. On the other hand, one can appreciate a sign seen in some dentist's offices: "You don't have to brush and/or floss all your teeth ... just the ones you want to keep." I never met an intelligent person "yet" who was able to pay cash for a brand new very expensive car, then drive it home, & immediately removed & throw away the oil filter & the air filter ..... I might meet a guy like this one day. Bottom line is, it is your car, & it is your decision ..... please respect varying Model A opinions of others; but always try to do what you feel comfortable with in all of your choices. |

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
I have had my Coupe since 1962, and it has no oil filter. I have a lead foot when it comes to driving my Coupe on the interstates, and cruising at 55 to 60 mph with the stock differential is normal for me. I use 10W40 synthetic oil exclusively, and change it once per year.
Not once have I experienced a problem of unusual wear in the engine. Not once have I found any sludge in the valve chamber or oil pan. My thought is to filter the oil remotely while the car is idle in the garage. An external electric pump, filter, intake & return hoses in a plastic tub should do it.

Re: Oil Filtering Advice
I live on a dirt road and many times the dust is so bad you can hardly see. I can't really even consider operating any kind of engine, Model A or Massey or New Holland or Harley-Davidson, without the air and oil filters in place. I use the a-ford-able oil filter set-up with the 90 degree adapter and the Hi-boy with the K&N filter. and full synthetic Amsoil and filters, or Wix. That's my opinion anyway.
