Has anyone used the Firestone 5.25-21 tires on a 28/29 A?

Yes! They give a bigger footprint and about 5% higher gearing. In that regard, they are not much different from running a 3.54 diff ratio. They are rated 6 ply walls so they are stiffer than the 4.40/4,50X21 tyres. That works in your favour in windy conditions. On one of our long outback trips, we had a strong cross wind one day and I noticed that some cars lurched sideways as they went past say, a roadside bush and they were protected from the wind, only to lurch back again when they came back into the wind. I decided to investigate that night when the cars were parked together. I found that the cars that didn't veer across the road were all running 5.25X21 tyres with their 6 ply walls. The others were on 4.40/4.50X21 tyres with soft 4 ply walls.
I greatly prefer the feeling of the extra stability when driving. Braking is also better because of he bigger footprint.
