What are they and where are they?

In the middle east, in a cave in the side of a mountain guarded by a 200 year old crusader left behind from the campaign. He was told they would soon be back to get him. They returned in '36 Ford pickup that had its fenders removed with lake style headers on it. The noise from the vehicle reverberating through the approach valley startled the crusader so much so that he dashed back into the cave and sealed it permanently with a 200 hundred ton boulder. It is rumored that the crusader has not run out of breathable air yet and he spends his time polishing the aluminum intakes and heads on the holy graille engines.

When I had to replace the motor in my '38' coupe I had various blocks (non '38) to choose from, we tested three which failed. The Motor Engineer then took pity on me and sold me a '38' block from his personal stock. That for me was a Holy Graille.

Then again, when I bought my '35' pickup from the States I was pleasantly surprised to discover a '52' Mercury motor under the bonnet, again another Holy Graille.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Any Flathead which is not cracked, does not run hot, is under +.060 bore, and is yours.

That my friend is the quest you have undertaken. Be prepared to spend lots and lots of money buying things you can't re-sale to others with a straight face. Have a scrappers number handy, they love old Ford Iron. Make sure your Horse is a good one and can handle lots of far trips to drag home heavy stuff.

I did some work for a mate and the payment was a standard bore 36 LB block,its now assembled as a spare for the 33.

Any flathead 46 to 53 Ford V8 block the will bore 3 7/16 and still have .090 walls.
I have had several but had to go through about a 100 to get them.

IMHO, the 'Holy Grail' of flathead engines is the little 21 stud, 221 ci engine that's in my '35 fordor sedan (Avatar) that has just taken me a little over 6,000 miles since June 4th and will hopefully take me another 1,000+ miles in the next 3 to 4 days to my home in Maryland. This engine will run all day long at 60-65 mph and still have enough reserve power to quickly pass anything traveling less than that speed.

Pete: You just answered the question I've been going to ask you for months. You've always talked about your 3 7/16" engines and I've always been curious as to how many you had to cull thru before you found suitable cores. Now I know. Thanks.

My version . Yes the intake is 34 but I do have the 33 stuff that belongs under the funny aircleaner but I drive this car a lot I don't need to babysit a DL carb on a daily basis . 33 fuel pumps are no problem - I just don't care for the DL carbs . B-sides King Arthur told me to do it .

That depends a lot on the persons project and goals. For some an LB Block, for others it would be a late Merc block. For a select few it would be a true 32 block that is rebuildabe. Rod
