And besides all that, if the guy was really good he could use the original gauge head parts and have the finished product not be able to be told it was counterfiet.

You just have to find the right guy.

the specific gravity of tetra-bromo-ethane is 2.95
the specific gravity of mecurochrome is 0.89-0.95
So that won't work...and is probably even more toxic than the tetra!

First, you have to search out parts for a design you dream up. Some times you have to rob parts from and existing electronic gizmo used for a completely different application.
Some times the parts you need are not made any more so that makes the search more interesting. In this case, I have seen the parts that woould work for this gizmo we are talking about. It was at least 10 years ago but it is quite likely many electronic hobbyists will know something about it. Go to an electronic swap meet and ask around. I don't fool with that stuff any more but if I hear of something I will post it here.
