"Backfire" can be ambiguous. Is it through the carb or the pipe?

If it's backfiring thru the carb that sounds like the fuel delivery is not keeping up with the demand (A/F ratio going lean) at half throttle and above.
Check the fuel pressure at the carb and verify that it remains steady. You may have a partial obstruction somewhere between the gas tank and the carb like a clogged fuel filter or even in the tank at the pickup, insufficient tank vent, crud in the fuel line, or it might be the fuel pump laying down on the job at higher speed. Vacuum leak is another possibility.

If this is something that gets worse after it has run for a while, then recovers when running from cold again, it may be the HT side of the distributor. I have had rotor arm problems and distributor cap problems that gave similar symptoms. I've had this in helmet, crab and Lucas distributors.

Mart.
