Default Fan removal

How does this "special" nut work to remove the fan. Looks like a coupling nut.

You hold the fan by the hub and hit the nut with a hammer. This special nut should put the hammer hit force on the shaft, and not on the threads.

I have a new fan and the special nut arriving today. I'm not clear on the nut either. Do you hit down on the nut, or hit on the end of the nut? Thanks.

Is this done on a bench, or can you use this tool while the fan and waterpump are still on the engine ??

Just hold onto the housing and give the end a good whack. Usually only takes one or two.

I thought the purpose of the special nut was to enable removing the fan while on the engine. That's why I was confused about what side of the nut to hit, since there isn't much clearance between the shaft and the radiator. I visualized hitting the nut on its side.

Even if you could get the fan loose, there wouldn't be room to remove it.
