Default Battery Help.

I'm trying (without success so far ) to locate a 6 volt battery with the correct dimensions (10&½” long, 7&1/4” wide & 8” tall) for the '47 LC battery box and hold down. Any ideas as to where I might fine one? As always, help is appreciated. Thanks, Vic

Vic:
I am not being a smart A** but for the height are you measuring to the top of the post ???? I believe that is where a battery height is taken.

Hi Bill, no I was measuring the height of the case, not the post, as I need the "hold-down" to fit the case. There is plenty of room between the top of the "post" and the hood with an 8" tall battery. I guess I should have been more exacting in my request but, I really don't know too much about Flatheads and such... I’m just fishing here…

I think if I was looking for a 6 volt battery locally or quick it would be a trip to Tractor Supply. The guy probably doesn't want an Optima 6 volt but Amazon now and then have them on sale with free shipping. I suppose you have tried Antique Auto Battery in Hudson Ohio. On Ebay type in Ford Script battery and you get the other guy who sells the correct dimension battery and also someone is listing a NOS Motorcraft 6 volt battery that they have not been able to sell, this is listed wrong as a 1966 battery,it may be the battery size that will fit. Tractor Supply is where to get a cheap one though.

I struck out at the local Tractor Supply store but, that was with a phone call to them, the kid on the phone didn't know the difference between a 6 & 12 volt battery and I'm really not sure what he was measuring.. I think I'll take a ride over to the store and see for myself as I have bought correct size 6 volt batteries from them before. There was an Optima 6 volt in the car but I had it tested and it was a goner. I've got one of my Optima 6 volts in the car now but the owner wants an "original looking" battery... Thanks for the Ebay tip, I appreciate it.

Ebay also shows an empty Ford Script case to put an Optima battery in,problem is the top. I wish I could find one of the plastic fake tops a couple V8ers made a few years ago for these cases, I think the old shock absorber guy Lou Trinque made some, mayby not. The Antique Auto battery ones are tar and crumble easily.

Here is a photo (sorry for the soft focus) of the "plastic battery case" I've got. I don’t remember where I got it, it was a while ago. It doesn’t have the old style “tar top” look though. I had it in our '39 CS with an Optima, until that Optima died.

Vic,
Take a look at this link. http://m.napaonline.com/Tablet/parts...244_0398954089

If the link doesn't work it's for thier no 7244 battery. The application is for a 47 LC.
Happy hunting!

PS: the 7244 is 640 CCA. There is 7204 that is 780 CCA. That one is in the Courier. The Courier is not at home or I would give you the measurements.

Vic,
CARQUEST has one that is 10 1/4" long, 7" wide and 8" tall. Should work with your hold down. CCA 780, CA 940 Part # 2-30.
Should work with your hold down case. Mine says Farm and commercial on it. Maybe NAPA can cross reference that #

Thanks Chuck & John, I will follow up on those batteries. I just drove the '47 LC down to the shop to do a real diagnostic test on the generator, etc. and we determined that the generator is in fact "toast"... I'll be pulling it out at lunch and taking it in for a rebuild...

I put a NAPA battery in my 48 Lincoln and it fits well. The posts are reversed though. If your battery is under the front seat that should be no problem.

Up-Date...

I just got off the phone with NAPA, gave them the 7244# and the measurements will work! Going to pick it up this afternoon... Also going to drop off the generator to get it rebuilt... Hopefully we'll get things ('47 LC) moving again... Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Vic:
The point I was making is if some one is not fiscally measuring the Batt. and only looking up in a book that may be why there is a problem. Just a thought.

Bill, You are right, I didn't think of that... NAPA just called and said the battery has been delivered so... if it ever stops raining... I'll take a ride and pick it up.

That is the very battery I've been using in my '47 for years. Doesn't last forever but I got 4+ years (40,000 miles) out of my last one that I just replaced. They call it a "commercial" battery so there is no consumer type warranty on it but mine lasted, like I said, 4+ years.

I had to decide between the two when I just bought mine. The smaller one is stronger but doesn't look right in the '47 and the "conversion" kit I use doesn't fit it as well so I bought the larger one again. It is the right size and looks great, especially with my "conversion" kit on it. ($30.00 here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330376684091...84.m1439.l2649)

That does look nice; I may get a few of those for our 6 volt Flatheads. Thanks Prof.

We are lucky with the 33 and 34 ,as the battery is hidden under the floor ,so its easy to fit one of the optima 6v ones in,and dont they start good then.

AC DELCO is a close match # 417A. I just got one for my panel. It has black caps. Ray

Note: I took all of the modern stickers off the top and stuck them to the side against the fire wall so I still have them but they're out of sight.
