Question Fuel Pump

I have a mechanical fuel pump (without glass) that has started to leak at the edge of the diaphragm. Per the Shop Manual instructions (pg. 103) I tightened the cover screws, to no avail. What have I done wrong, too tight?

Where can I get replacement parts for the fuel pump: screen (9365), upper gasket (9364), diaphragm-compatible with ethanol (9398?), and lower gasket (number=?)?

Joe, the leak you mention is usually indicative of a ruptured diaphragm. Those can be purchased from a number of places. Joblot, Carpenter, etc.
That's a an easy pump to rebuild. The only bolt you may tighten too much is the one that holds the top cover in place. I've seen guys tighten that down so much as to cave the cover a bit and thereby allow vacuum to escape.

Joe,
Well here goes....I make my own diaphragms and salvage the stems etc
from defunct diaphragm assemblies. I use military grade viton that pumps straight
alcohol....it is not cheap but it works.

I have checked with all of the regular houses (MAC's, Drake, Carpenter, Job Lot, etc) and still cannot find a source for the screen (9365) and upper gasket (9364). Help!

Mike, some clarification from the English teacher please?
Tell me if you will, if vacuum is allowed to escape, would you then have more, or less vacuum than you started with?

I think, you got it right.
If vacuum escapes, you would have less of it.
If prisoners escape, you have less of them.
