Couldn't Pass It Up
A neighbor called to tell me about a local sale with a Model A. Went to the sale and came home with a 29 Coupe. It had been in a barn since June of 1979. It saw its first sunlight on May 2, 2013. The lighting at the sale was not good and I arrive just before it was to sell, but when I got it home it was even better the I has expected. The gas tank is clean as a whistle, no rust, and the motor is free with no parts missing. I think it will be running tomorrow.
And I was starting to think there were no more of them out there. Jim |

You bring this home and put it in the same garage as the other one and you know what happens? Don't say we didn't warn you. Joe K

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
I see it still has a trunk. Not converted to a rumble seat. Good. Gonna drive it the way it is or restore it?

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
Did some cleanup work today to get 34 years of crud off and to see a little better what the car looked like. Was generally pleased as I found no body damage or rust. I was disappointed to find that someone along the way has put a sheet metal top on. It is screwed on around the edges and then filled in on the edges with a hard compound of some sort then painted with a heavy sealing type paint. Anyway it will have to come off and fixed with a proper top. The paint appears to be a heavy coat of lacquer that is cracked with age in large part and peeling off in some areas. The pictures have a couple of the engine. Not sure what has been done to the wiring. Different looking cut-out on generator and a box with a fuse in the lighting circuit. Any ideas what this is? The rest looks standard except the ignition switch is a push-pull instead of a key. Will work on the engine tomorrow if weather permits.

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
It looks like someone installed the later TALL water outlet on the head.
All I can think of for the box is a relay for the headlights and/or horn. At first it looked like a voltage regulator, but the generator and cutout are connected as original. The cutout is simply an aftermarket rectangular one. |

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
They used the box as a relay when adapting to sealed beam lights, cause the sealed beams use more power then the old bulbs. Generally the wiring was heaver from the relay to the sealed beams, and the old light sw turned on the relay. The box was also fed right from the battery with heaver wire.

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
The box by the light switch is a light relay ( so the light switches closes the relay and the relay has the current for the lights running through its contacts rather than the switch). I would guess that is a voltage regulator rather than a cutout mounted on the generator.

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
the box on the gen is a voltage regulator, which is better than the cut out it makes the gen work more like and altinator and it easier on the battery

This is simply an aftermarket cutout with no field control wire. Notice the single wire coming out of the generator is the output post, which goes into the cutout, and then out to the terminal box. |

Re: Couldn't Pass It Up
I pulled the pan, head, and valve cover plate today. It seems I have lucked-out with this motor. It is as clean as a pin. Must have been just rebuilt before it was stored in 1976. The oil was clean - no sludge. I pulled the stater and checked it while I was at it. I'll get it back together over the weekend and hopefully it will run as good as it looks.
The engine # does not match the title. Engine # A2546224 - what year car would this be for? Jim |
